Grandpa Beck’s Cover Your A$$ets™

How to Win:

In Grandpa Beck’s Cover Your A$$ets™,the first player to collect a Million Dollars in Assets is the winner.

Overview:

Players make pairs of the same asset cards and place them stack, face up on the table. Each player has his own collection of assets, and mustkeep them in plain view of other players. Pairs are placed alternately;horizontal and vertical, to keep the sets separate. This is how you “Cover YourAssets!” Collect as many assets as possible and try to keep them from being stolenby other players!

Game Set Up:

Thoroughly shuffle both decks together. Deal each playerfour cards, face down. Each player looks at their own hand of cards. Place theremaining cards in the center of the table, face down, as the draw pile. Nextto the draw pile, flip the top card over and place it face up to begin thediscard pile.

Order of Play:

The player to the left of the dealer plays first and will bethe dealer for the second hand. Play and the opportunity to deal, continuesclockwise.

How to Play Each Turn:

Each turn you may choose ONE of the following FOURoptions:

  1. If you have any two matching asset cards in your hand you may lay them down on the table in front of you, face up, as a pair. Gold and Silver cards are wild cards and can be used behind any asset card to make a pair. You may only lay down one pair per turn.
  2. If the top card of the discard pile matches a card in your hand, you may take that card to make a pair. This pair is then laid down for your turn.
  3. You may challenge another player to attempt to steal his or her top set of assets:

There are three qualificationsto be able to do so:

1. First, you must have placed down your first pair ofassets.

2. Second, the person you want to steal from must haveplaced down more than one pair of assets. (The first pair of assets is safe andcan not be stolen.)

3. Third, you must have a card in your hand that matchesanother player’s top set of assets. You may also challenge with a Wild Card.

      • To attempt the steal, you flash a matching card, or a wild card, at another player.
      • To defend against a steal, the other player flashes back a matching asset card or a wild card.
      • A second attempt to steal the same assets may be made.
      • This goes back and forth until one player cannot, or chooses to not, meet the challenge.
      • The winner of the challenge wins the complete top set of assets that were challenged, as well as all cards shown during the challenge(s). This new set is placed on the winners asset stack.
  1. If you cannot, or choose to not do one of the above three options, you must discard one card from your hand face up into the discard pile and then draw the top card from the draw pile.

Replenishing Your Hand:

Each time a set is made, cards are drawn to replenish yourhand before the next player’s turn. After each challenge turn is completed, cards are also drawn to replenish your hand. The player who looses thechallenge gets to draw first.

Concluding Each Round:

The round ends when all cards from the draw pile are drawnand all remaining cards in the player’s hands are used or discarded.

Scoring:

After the round has concluded, each player adds up the facevalue of all their collected assets.

Winning the Game:

Rounds are played, completed, and tallied until one player hasreached a total asset amount of One Million Dollars. At this point, the game isover and that player is declared the winner. If two players exceed One MillionDollars, the highest score wins!

We hope you have many great times playing this game withfamily and friends!

Options for Two Players or More than Six:

  • For Two Players, use a hand of five cards each.
  • For more than six players, add in one extra deck of cards per three players, or use a second game for another table of players and make it a tournament.

Grandpa Beck’s Tips: (add Grandpa Beck illustration)

  • If you have a Gold or Silver card in your hand when the game begins, it is often wise to use it behind a high value card in your first pair. It is then safe from being stolen. You get a pair down right away, so you are ready to steal other cards when available.
  • Sometimes it is advantageous to let a challenger steal your cards instead of meeting the challenge if you decide to save a certain card for later use.
  • Deciding to use your wild cards to make pairs, to challenge or defend, is a major point of strategy.
  • It is always optional to use a wild card, or choose not to.
  • Sometimes high value sets can become worth hundreds of thousands as players steal and re-steal them, until they finally get “covered.” Winning that set can help you have a great chance of being the first millionaire.
  • As you play you will come up with other strategies to maximize your score.
  • When adding up your points each round, it is easiest to first place your cards in stacks of like point value, then to restack the cards in $100,000 ($100K) piles. Then just count the number of piles and add in the value of the remainder of the cards that did not reach $100K for a total score for that hand.
  • The total dollar points possible to be scored each round, less the value of cards in the discard pile, is $1,360,000.
  • Note: If the last card in the Discard Pile is used, another card is NOT drawn from the Draw Pile to restart the Discard Pile.
